In today’s reviews we have two essentially tenor-based quartets going head-to-head, as it were! One is a ‘Young Turks’ ‘ debut album, the other a slightly more senior, long established world-class quartet’s album launch gig.

The album takes the shape of a truly amazing debut from the John Martin Quartet, Dawning. Accessible yet solid jazz is alive and thriving as maybe it never has for decades, and this avodart debut is further proof of this. John Martin and his quartet bear looking out for, for they are almost certainly destined to go places. I’d certainly put money on Martin very rapidly entering the top ranks of tenorists on the British scene, and pianist Jonjo Grisdale is equally promising.
